Exceeded my expertations
I don't normally do reviews, but I was so impressed with this bookcase I had to write this. I ordered this bookcase a few months ago. It arrived quickly. I'm working on my dissertation and have tons of books that I needed this for. I did not get around to opening the box and putting it together until recently. Everything was packed well and none of the boards were scratched or chipped. When I opened the box the first thing that struck me was how nice the finish and color was for a relatively inexpensive bookcase. I purchased the medium cherry. Often inexpensive furniture has that tacky fake wood look, and the color of the wood finish is unnatural. The boards were also solid and sturdy. I bought this mainly to be functional as my book collection was getting out of hand. I didn't want to spend a lot, but I was hoping to find something that wasn't cheesy looking either. I have other antique cherry furniture in my living room, and I expected that this would likely be noticeably cheap looking--but I figured "hey, it was either this, or keeping my books in tacky bags and boxes". Much to my surprise, it did not look cheesy, it feels strong and sturdy, and the finish and color harmonize well with my other furniture. Assembly took time, but was straight forward. The instructions are all visual in pictures. If you take care in aligning everything properly like we did, you end up with a very large, solid, sturdy, stable bookcase. The bookcase has lots of holes that allow you to adjust where you want the shelves to go. The pegs that hold the shelves are made of solid metal with an antiqued look, not some cheap plastic or metal peg. The pegs also have a pin that fits into small holes on the underside of the shelf- boards that keeps the shelf from moving. That was a feature I didn't expect. It took a few attempts to get the pin to align with the holes in the shelves, but once they did, the board was securely in place. Only negative issue was when constructing the frame, you really need to be sure you have all your screws, pegs, and hardware in their proper place, and screwed or pushed in all the way so everything aligns correctly, and solidly. If you do this you end up with a firm and secure bookshelf like we did. We did have one metal hardware piece break while we put it together, but the installation kit came with extra pieces. For the price of this furniture, I'm extremely happy with this bookshelf. I first saw this exact same piece of furniture on the Costco website, they only had 1 color selection. After looking around on the internet I found it at Walmart for $100 less, and in 3 color choices. This bookcase greatly exceeded my expectations.
