Serves its purpose
The 10 Spring Street Burlington Collection Horizontal Bookcase looks nice in pictures and it looks nice in person but there is plenty left to be desired. First, I will say that it comes packaged very well. I was very impressed with the way the hardware (cams, screws, etc...) was packaged. It came in a blister pack with labeling on the back telling you which set was for each step to go along with the instructions. Now the instructions themselves were not the best. Had I not been knowledgeable about putting stuff like this together, I would have been completely lost. The instructions showed only pictures & were saying to put the locking cam in the wrong way with the head of it going into the screw holes and also on some steps, it didn't even show placing of certain hardware at all. It left you to guess. Once I was able to get past the instructions, I had the bookcase put together in about 45 minutes. What I don't like about this unit is the sides are not solid at all. They are basically 2 thin sheets of paneling screwed onto a couple of thin posts. You can press on the sides with your hands and it gives easily. The top and bottom of the unit are solid and very sturdy. I would say this piece is more for looks than functionality although it will serve its purpose. The adjustable shelves are nice. Luckily this unit came with extra hardware as some of the pegs for the shelves were messed up and would not fit into the holes. Another con to this unit is from one side, you can see the cam locks. It makes it look very unattractive but I guess you could buy wood grain stickers to cover them. Finally, the last thing that I found different, most units like this you put together, you usually nail the flimsy back on. This one you screw the flimsy backing on. It claims there are pre-drilled holes. I found only two pre-drilled holes and so I used my drill to screw the rest of the screws in to secure the back. All in all, it will serve its purpose but if you are like me and want your furniture to be completely solid, this is not the product to go with.

4' bookcase that can be used anywhere
This is a nice looking bookcase. I laid out all of the parts but only the wood/particle board parts. That is because the screws, cams and dowels are INDIVIDUALLY packaged and the step # for each is marked on the backside. I cut the cardboard on the back of the parts container with a box cutter at each step. What a relief to not have all of these parts on the floor and make sure you have them all. This packaging made putting this bookcase together much easier than anything else I have put together. Not all of the directions were clear enough. Parts 5 and 6 attach to 4 like an apron that hangs down the edges of the wood. The instructions for the cam lock system are not very clear either. You push the cam into the wood. To make sure I had it in correctly, I used a small flashlight to see that it would be open to accept the part that will be going into it. It needs to be the most open part of the cam. That part gets screwed into the piece of wood, i.e. parts 5 & 6 to be used with 4. After putting in the dowels you then fit it into part 4. If you do not have the cam in correctly, you will have to turn the screw until the cam will accept the part that goes into it. If you have checked this previously, you will find it much easier to match the parts. There are 12 steps to putting it together. I cannot tell you how long it took me as the individually packaged parts allowed me to leave the area and come back to it without worrying that parts would be all over the place or that I would kick the part accidentally. The bookcase itself is attractive. It is sturdy except for the side parts 2 & 3. This part has an insert already screwed in and the inserts are only 1/8” thick. Treat these sides gently. Once the complete bookcase is put together, I doubt that it will pose any kind of problem. The shelves are adjustable. I chose to put a picture of the front and back of the package as the picture of the bookcase will be available when you ae purchasing it. This bookcase can go in any room and I plan to use mine in the grandchildren’s bedroom or my office.

Taller Than it Looks in the Ad
Putting things together is a monster for many people so it is an awesome idea to have the hardware numbered per step. It makes things much simpler for even the less accomplished assembler. I would suggest using an electric tool for all the screws, done by hand and screwdriver, the numerous parts will leave your hands aching.I love the color! The rich walnut is beautiful and the back of the unit is a solid color so it doesn’t have to face a wall (which helps with designing the room’s layout). However, there were no listed measurements in the ad I saw, so the location I had planned is not going to work. Living in a small apartment, this causes difficulties; because it’s taller than I thought from the picture.The roominess of the shelving is great. And it is horizontal so if you have little ones, they can easily reach their own books. The top is beautiful enough to be left plain but it is also a great height for showing off knick-knacks or just sitting things down when you come home from work.I am very happy with this bookcase. My only complaint is that I did not know its measurements before ordering.

great multi-purpose
I received this horizontal bookcase and it is the best. I was looking to purchase a console table for the entryway of our home but this works better than a table would have.The color of the product I received was listed as (walnut), I must say the case is darker in person than it appears online. But this is not a deal breaker for me. The product listed the materials as wood. Yes the top is solid wood and the shelved are composite wood (((( not article board pressed board)))). and the back is a pre-manufactured piece. The only thing I would consider a downer is that the ends/sides of the book case are hallow not real wood at all!!! The product is pretty easy to assemble. There were just two issues I had first the instructions on how to attach the anchor hook/screw is incorrect in the instruction manual and the label was on the wrong side for part number four which is the middle vertical board in the picture. Note of help to anyone who purchased this item. To put this together a POWER DRILL is a MUST. I started attaching the back covering to the frame of the unit by hand and literally my index fingers and thumb felt like they were about to explode they hurt so bad . A power tool will be your best friend when securing the twenty-one screws. Over all I love this book case. It is durable, and attractive; I would recommend this purchase to anyone.

Great for the price
WARNING: Watch a Youtube Video of how cam bolt & lock pieces work before you begin. YOU WILL THANK YOURSELF. We wasted an entire hour trying to figure out how the heck those things work. Directions are not great and say the bolt must be FLUSH with the wood. Well, flush means ONLY TO THE MIDDLE OF THE BOLT. So after watching the video on how those work (and the entire unit goes together with those) it went by much faster and with much less cussing. We purchased another piece of furniture from a different store afterward that has the same system and we were glad we cut our teeth on this one first with the cam bolt/lock system. Our only complaint is that the back of this is basically tough cardboard but you CANNOT tell even when shelves are empty. You WILL need a drill to drill pilot holes for the teeny tiny screws that attach the back to these -- there are only two pre-drilled for you & there are about 15-20. Oh -- and black screws are visible inside shelves if you don't plan on filling the shelf with books edge-to-edge. You'll need some cheap spackle and paint to fill those in. These flank either side of our fireplace until we can afford true built-ins and they look pretty darn good. Fit is perfect. For just over a hundred bucks -- we're thrilled.
