Exactly what I needed

Customer Rating

We moved recently, and I had just decided that I needed a new bookcase for my office, but hadn't actually gotten to looking around to see what I could find, and here this one was! It is just the size I needed, since I didn't have a lot of horizontal space, but the 6' height is perfect. I have loads of books, everything from novels to history to craft to you name it, and a lot of them have been sitting in boxes. I also collect a ton of little things, and they will also have a place to reside now. I very much like the color, it isn't particle board with a cover glued to it, it's sturdy, solid feeling, doesn't wobble or anything. One shelf is fixed, the others you can position as you like. I have to admit that I didn't put it together, but my husband says that it was easy to put together. He liked it enough that he had me order one for him, too. Now, all his books and model planes will have a home!

Good solid piece of furniture

Customer Rating

I had several doubts about this bookshelf when it was delivered. The first try at delivery resulted in an item harmed in transit. The second try arrived but the packaging was torn. As I moved it inside screws were spilling out on the floor. This was caused by poor packaging and the complete destruction of the parts (screw, etc.) packaging. I immediately took inventory and I found all of the necessary pieces. There was no damage to the bookshelf material itself. The bookshelf was fairly easy for one person to assemble. As with all products requiring assembly, try to follow the instructions and read all of the explanatory notes on each page. The only hard part was the typical installation of the cardboard rear paneling. There are a lot of screws involved and you will soon be eliminating as many as possible because your hands get sore. I also had doubts about a bookshelf on four legs. That seemed unstable but when assembled I find the bookshelf very stable. You may want to use the wall stabilizer (provided) if the bookshelf will be placed in a busy area or if smaller children are in the house. After a relatively short assembly I am pleased with the final product and will probably order another one. I just hope the packaging improves next time.

Nice bookcase

Customer Rating

The shelves are solid and strong. The way the bookcase is assembled, the shelves can be full and hold heavy books. The sides of the bookcase are laminate and wobbly. The shelves and side frame give it support, but they are still flexible and if something hit it, it would dent or make a hole. The bookcase came in a box to assemble. Well protected and wrapped, but the package for the screws and assembly parts was open, loose and all mixed together at an end of the box. Assembly took a couple hours for one person, at a non-rushed speed. Everything went smoothly following directions. The longest part of assembly was putting on the back. Unlike cheaper bookcases, this bookcase back has screws to hold it in place. Much stronger than nails that can pop right back out. But it takes some time screwing them all into place. All of the boards seemed to have pieces of shavings that look like fiberglass on them. Make sure to wipe them down before assembly, or it starts getting everywhere. The bookcase is top heavy, so you will have to use the anchor to attach to a wall. There are some places you can see the head of the screws inside the bookcase. It would be nice if there were some caps to cover them so they weren’t visible. The walnut finish is a very nice color and looks nice.

How much weight will it hold?

Customer Rating

Even a wood shelf will bend if the books are too heavy. We’ve had both kinds of bookcases-the wood kind and the cheap kind. And until recently, I didn’t pay any attention to how much weight each shelf will hold, because we had so many books. But right now it’s the main question on my mind. The answer is forty-five pounds on the top and forty pounds on each shelf below it. If you stay within these limits, then there shouldn’t be any bowing, unless you want to do that yourself. One of the things that surprised me about the bookcase, is that it wasn’t as wide as what I had before. I think this is a good thing, though, because if I forget that the shelf can only hold forty pounds, then I’m less likely to overtax the poor thing. There are fives shelves but it is only the first, third, and fourth shelves from the top, that are adjustable. It’s multi-toned. I counted three shades of brown and it looks to me like they used pieces from other styles of bookshelves from casual to elegant, to make a new style. When I look at the front view, it looks beautiful and the contrast is pretty. Looking at the side panels disturbs my sense of order. I think I must be the only one in the house who feels this way. While putting it together, my husband kept saying that this is what he is used to seeing in executive offices and the quality of packing was better, because they used tailor made cases of Styrofoam, to protect the panels. The backing is two thin sheets of fiberboard, coated with a cherry looking stain. If you should get one where the space around the predrilled holes is bare, not to worry, because you don’t even see them after the bookcase is put together. In assembling, the bookshelf parts come with numbered stickers and predrilled holes. Once you get the right numbered pieces matched and ready to attach, remove any stickers before connecting them. Trying to remove them afterwards was a royal pain. The pictorial and word instructions were easy to follow. Just take your time. The only tricky part was putting the top on, because you have to align the back, top and sides altogether over the wooden dowels, before making it secure. We were grateful that the sides came assembled. That was very handy. One aspect I appreciated that was different from other bookshelves we put together, was that, instead of a separate little bag for the screws and whatnot, they had a compartmentalized packet that looked like a set you’d buy at the hardware store. It had the thin cardboard backing with the clear stiff plastic window cases, and an extra set of screws and a safety strap, to secure the bookcase to the wall. The bookshelf is beautiful and brings a cozy and elegant atmosphere to our living room.

Not Worth it!

Customer Rating

The first item I received as a Walmart Spark Reviewer in October (which I chose) was the 10 Spring Street Burlington Collection 5-Shelf Bookcase in Walnut. As an avid book reader I can always use another bookcase and I have put many together over the years with no trouble whatsoever until I received this bookcase. When I think of Walmart, I think of the best quality at the lowest prices and this bookcase just does not fit that statement. The side panels are already put together in the box and accordingly a very large box arrives. No problem. Every seam or potential opening in the box was taped several times, which I thought was odd, but thankfully it was taped because as you can see from the picture (the red package), the only item in the package was the wall anchor. Everything else, screws, wooden dowels, cam bolts, cams, everything fell out of the box all over the floor when I sliced the first piece of tape from the box and they were all over the place. Aggravating, but I knew what these items were as I had put many bookcases together over the years and had just put a desk together in August with no trouble whatsoever. As I said previously, the sides were already put together so the only things you have to put together are the shelves, attach to the sides, the top, and then the back. Problem is I was never able to put this bookshelf together. I would get two shelves on and when I tried to put the third one in, the other two fell out. I even had two different guys trying to help me with it but to no avail. Every other bookshelf I have put together and even my desk, the back is put on by little nails. Not this bookshelf, the entire back is screwed in! Yes, forty five screws attach the back of the bookshelf. Unfortunately, these are pretty much the only screws holding this bookshelf together. The wooden dowels with the cams and cam bolts are the only things holding the shelves on the side panels. Also, the side panels that are supposed to be together, don't stay together. The insert (which is really, really thin) is supposed to slide in to a groove in the center. Unfortunately, the seam isn't large enough (or the insert is to thin) but it pops out and you can't get it to stay in. I tried to take a photograph but the left seam is out of the groove roughly three feet and the right is out approximately two and a half feet. I spent days trying to put this together and have spent the past few weeks trying to figure out what the problem was - and finally I was able to. The holes do not line up! That's why I could only get two out of three of the shelves put up. Not that it matters anymore because when a friend tried to help me put the top on, the bookshelf fell and the wooden dowels from the top all broke - half stuck in the top and the other half stuck to the attachments.Read more
